The United Nations has issued a press release “Pacific Prepares for Strengthening El Niño”, with warnings of high sea levels in countries near the equator and severe drought in the South Pacific countries over the coming months.
In response to the upcoming El Niño, the Pacific Islands Smaller Island States (SIS) has released a Climate Change Declaration urging COP 21 to limit global temperatures, ensure that those affected are protected, and uphold the polluter pays principle.

The 29th Pacific Educational Conference (PEC): Our Ocean, Our Islands, Our Children brought together 1017 participants, making it the largest international event to be held in the Marshall Islands. Educators and thought leaders from around the world participated in 110 workshops and 7 plenary sessions to discuss climate change, teaching methods, and innovations in education. PEC also recognized the 2015 Pacific Teachers of the Year (TOY) from American Samoa, Chuuk, Guam, Hawaii, Kosrae, Marshall Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, Pohnpei, and Yap. The 30th PEC will be held in Palau in 2017.

We are inspired and humbled by the resilience of our brothers and sisters in Chuuk and Yap that were devastated by Typhoon Maysak. We hope that you will join us in our effort to help a community that has lost most of their homes and schools.
GUAM DONATIONS TO CHUUK
The Salvation Army is sending a container, provided by Matson to Chuuk for disaster relief efforts on Friday April 17th.
We are accepting donations to fill the container with items such as water, canned food, bags of rice, noodles, first aid kits, tarps, nylon rope, rolls of plastic, clothing, bedding and hygiene items. Donations for “Chuuk Relief” can be dropped off from 8am-4:30pm at The Salvation Army’s administration building, located in Tiyan, around the corner from the old Gate Theater or the WIC office.
Donations will be accepted until Thursday April 16th by 5pm. Volunteers will be needed to help sort clothing and box various items from 1pm-5pm, Monday April 13th until Thursday April 16th.

Pacific Resources for Education and Learning is now accepting applications for part-time, non-paid internships in the Honolulu office in the fall, spring, and summer for undergraduates, advanced students, and recent graduates who are interested in gaining practical experience at a community-driven education-focused non-profit organization.
Successful candidates will be passionate about education and community development, and have:
High-level research skills;
Outstanding oral communication skills; and
Outstanding writing skills with an eye for detail and accuracy.
Applicants are encouraged to apply between one and three months in advance of their desired start date and must be eligible to work in the United States. Non-US citizens or permanent residents must already be in possession of a valid F1 or J1 visa at the time of their application.

PREL Senior Affiliate Dr. Megan Bang is the winner of the 2015 Bobby Write Award for Early Career Contributions to Research in Indigenous Education from the AERA Indigenous Peoples of the Americas Special Interest Group!
Dr. Bang’s explorations of how indigenous students engage in sophisticated cognitive tasks, such as navigating multiple epistemologies, have become seminal pieces for advancing culturally relevant science education.
